French café deal

After three years without a satisfactory agreement, unions and employers in France have agreed a new pay structure for those employed in café chains, with wider differentials for more experienced and more highly skilled employees.

It also guarantees automatic progression up the scale to anyone who has at least one year’s experience in the industry, including eight months in the same company.

€1 was worth 85p on 15 May.
