Nissan success

General union Unite called for a boost to pay and conditions to recognise the huge contribution workers have made to the success of the Nissan brand, as the firm celebrated over one million cars being built over the past two years at its Sunderland plant.

Tony Murphy, national officer, said the feat was a sign of the company’s success, “but it is also a sign of the phenomenal achievements of the workforce in Sunderland”. Nissan must recognise the contribution of the workforce during the next set of pay negotiations, he added.

The workforce is currently in the final year of a two-year pay deal, but Unite will soon begin preparing its pay claim for January 2015.
