Crossrail safety protest

Last month, construction union UCATT demonstrated outside the Crossrail tunnelling contract over safety and workplace abuses on the project, which is being undertaken by ATC (Alstom, TSO and Costain).

According to the union, its members say they are being forced to work until they are physically exhausted. UCATT is also concerned about the “appalling welfare facilities”, with workers “forced to walk up to two miles underground in order to go to the toilet and canteen facilities”.

The union has written to London mayor Sadiq Khan, Crossrail and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) urging them to undertake an independent inquiry into the abuses occurring on the project.
