New qualification launched for train drivers in Wales

Train drivers’ union ASLEF has worked with the Welsh government to launch the first accredited qualification for train driving in Wales. The new professional qualification is a level 3 apprenticeship rather than the less advanced standard one that exists in England.

Transport for Wales signed the first apprentices up last month after a two-and-a half-year project to develop the qualification, secure the funding and launch it. Over 100 new drivers will be recruited every year for the next five years and all will have the chance to gain the qualification.

ASLEF general secretary Mick Whelan was “thrilled” at the development, saying “it’s a great step forward for training, for train drivers, for the railway, and for Wales.”

He added: “And I note that it is only under the Welsh government – a Labour government – that it has happened.”
