Green skills needed

Seafarers’ union Nautilus International has called on maritime employers and government to fund the retraining of Merchant Navy officers in the use of environmentally sustainable fuels and onboard systems.

Nautilus general secretary Mark Dickinson said: “We cannot tackle climate change without a radical transformation in how people and goods move, in how we move the world.”

But this must be done through a just transition, he said, “prioritising the maintenance and creation of good union jobs”.

Meanwhile, a survey of steelworkers by their union Community indicates that, while there will be no extensive “skills leap” needed in the green transition of the steel industry, there is a need for workers’ training in specific areas. The union says employers must invest in dedicated training.
