Safety Reps Rights: No. 2: Functions of safety reps

THE Safety Representatives and Safety Committees Regulations came into force nearly 30 years ago, in October 1978. Workplace Report is running a regular column this year highlighting the important rights won.

Safety reps have a wide-range of functions, beyond representing members. They have the right to investigate potential hazards, dangerous occurrences, the causes of incidents and ill health as well as complaints made by members. Reps also have the right to carry out inspections, to be involved with (though not responsible for) employers’ risk assessments and to see inspectors. They can attend safety committee meetings and use “facilities and assistance” provided by the employer. This includes paid time off and accommodation, equipment and information, as laid down by the code of practice drawn up by the employment advisory service ACAS.
