Positive discrimination

The European Court of Justice has ruled that it is not contrary to European Union (EU) law to adopt measures, which favour the employment of women where male and female candidates are equally qualified. The ruling, in Application by Badeck and Others, The Times Law Reports, 31 March 2000 also states that a law which required that there be a target of an equal number of female and male representatives on employee bodies would not be in contravention of EU law.
