Minimum wages rise in motor vehicle retail and repair

Pay rates rose in January by just under 2.5% in the motor repair and retail industry but the lowest rate rose by over 7% to reflect last October's increase in the National Minimum Wage (NMW).

Grade rates range from £159.90 to £209.82 for a 39- hour week. Modern Apprentice rates start at £85.80 (47.5% of the Grade C rate), rising to £126.75 (70%) in phase two of training and £163.02 (90%) in phase three. Other trainees receive the same rates (and £171.99 in their fourth year, where required) and there are also age-related scales for 'unindentured junior employees'.

Petrol forecourt rates for 39 hours range from £159.90 to £166.14.
