Amicus wins tribunal case for safety rep to attend advanced TUC training

Amicus manufacturing and services union has won an employment tribunal case for a safety rep to attend an advanced TUC course.

Paul Debenham, an Amicus rep at KLM UK Engineering , Norwich, applied for the Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety course in 1998 and 2001 but was refused the time off. He applied again this year and was refused at short notice, so took the course in his holiday time.

The tribunal found that Debenham's application was well founded. He received 20 days holiday as compensation for the time he missed and was allowed to attend the remainder of the course in an outside settlement.
