Recognition agreement at Canary Wharf

The T&G general union has gained recognition with one of the contract cleaning firms operating at London’s Canary Wharf, following an organising campaign among the largely immigrant workforce there (see Workplace Report, May 2004).

The agreement, which is voluntary, is with the company ISS and covers more than 200 cleaners.

The T&G does not plan to stop there, however. Union organiser Paul Davies, who negotiated the ISS agreement, said: “We are aiming to have 100% T&G membership amongst cleaners at Canary Wharf … ISS is one of the more reputable cleaning companies on the Wharf and we expect to reach a similar agreement with several others.”
