Local authority inspections down again

There has been another fall in the number of health and safety inspections and prosecutions by local authorities.

Local authority inspectors made 260,000 visits in 2002-03, 2% fewer than the previous year. The 230 visits per inspector were 8% down on 2001-02. And there were 296 prosecutions, compared with 325 the year before.

The figures are published in the HELA Health and Safety Activity Bulletin 2004, available at www.hse.gov.uk/statistics/industry/#la
