Workplace Report (September 2004)

Features: London weighting

London weighting at Royal Mail

The feature on London weighting in July's Workplace Report accidentally omitted the agreement reached at Royal Mail UK on 3 November 2003.

A £300 increase in London weighting from last October is to be followed by a further £300 rise in April 2005, and payments under the London recruitment and retention incentive scheme (RRIS) have been consolidated into pensionable pay.

From April 2005, the weighting (excluding RRIS payments) will be £3,882 in inner London and £2,636 in outer London - increases of 18.3% and 29.4% respectively on the amounts prior to October 2003. These figures would put Royal Mail near the top of our "public services" table for London weighting.

The CWU communications union has also established an agreement with management to base future increases on the cost of living.

For more details of the agreement, see the March 2004 issue of Workplace Report.
