Belt up

It is now illegal for drivers and passengers in vans and goods vehicles not to use seat belts.

As of last month, the Motor Vehicles (Wearing of Seat Belts) (Amendment) Regulations 2005, SI 2005 No.27, have removed the exemption for those engaged in collections or deliveries.

The CWU communication workers union, which negotiated a policy with Royal Mail five years ago for seat belts to be worn at all times, welcomed the legislation. CWU head of safety Dave Joyce advised members to "wear your seat belt and drive safely".
