Union violations

Trade unionists across the world faced a worsening situation last year, according to the annual survey of trade union rights violations published by the International Trade Union Confederation.

The survey, which examined 143 countries, revealed that 76 trade unionists were murdered in 2011, not counting workers killed during the Arab Spring. Thousands more were dismissed and arrested.

Colombia was once again the most dangerous country for trade unions (see Labour Research, June 2012, pages 17-18) with 29 killed. Ten trade unionists were assassinated in Guatemala and eight in Asia.
