Anti-racist education

The EIS Scottish teachers’ union is calling for anti-racist education to be made a requirement in all Scottish schools after an evaluation of current provision found that only four of the 24 local authorities that responded to the union’s request for information had a dedicated anti-racism policy.

The union’s call came ahead of figures published by the children’s charity NSPCC showing that in 2012-13 over 1,400 young people told its helpline service ChildLine that they were experiencing racist bullying — a 69% increase.

EIS general secretary Larry Flanagan said that “it is essential that we take appropriate steps to educate all our young people on anti-racism while highlighting the cultural value of the diverse ethnic mix that exists throughout Scotland”.
