Unions sign solidarity agreement

The Belgian union confederation FGTB/ABVV and its Polish counterpart OPZZ have signed an agreement promising their members assistance if they are working in one another’s countries.

Support will cover help with legal and other employment-related problems. It will be limited to members who are in the country for less than a year and will cover costs of up to €1,000 (£880) a case.

Jan Guz, head of the OPZZ, said that this was the first such agreement between unions from a country in Eastern and Central Europe and one in the West.

An estimated 52,000 Poles work in Belgium.
