Crossrail
The TSSA transport union has called for a public inquiry after the heavily-delayed Crossrail project last month confirmed further major delays to the opening timetable.
It is now expected to be open in the summer of 2021 — nearly three years behind schedule — and not fully operational until mid-2022.
According to the union, the updated estimated £18.25 billion budget for the line between Berkshire and Essex via central London is now more than £2 billion over the original expected costs.
It’s estimated that Transport for London, the body responsible for the transport system in Greater London, has lost between £500 million and £750 million in passenger revenue due to the delays.
Manuel Cortes, TSSA general secretary, said: “Crossrail is a disgrace and there has to be a public inquiry into its failings.”
