Union considers legal action
The United Voices of the World union is considering legal action against the Metropolitan Police after the head of the union’s legal department was arrested on a lawful picket line.
Barrister Franck Magennis was arrested while on the picket line at St George’s Hospital Medical School, University of London, during an industrial dispute over outsourcing.
The police descended on the picket line, warning all workers and union officials that they would be arrested if they failed to leave within five minutes.
When Magennis inquired as to the legal basis of this warning, he was arrested and handcuffed, and then quickly de-arrested on condition that he immediately leave the site.
