Workers on boards


The TUC has lost no time following up on prime minister Theresa May’s commitment to having workers on company boards, producing a blueprint that would put worker board representation into practice within a year. 


All aboard: making worker representation on company boards a reality says that, if May begins a consultation swiftly, the policy could be law within 12 months.


The TUC calls for a third of company board members to be worker representatives who should be directly elected by their colleagues. 


And it says the new law should apply to firms with workforces of over 250, which would cover around two-fifths of the private sector workforce. It could be phased in gradually, starting with larger businesses. TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady described the plans as “common sense”.
