Health & Safety Matters

Stress campaign launched

The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) last month launched a two-year European campaign called Healthy workplaces manage stress.

The campaign’s main message is that stress and psychological risks can be effectively managed and that psychosocial risks should be managed in a systematic way like any other occupational safety and health risk.

The latest EU-OSHA pan-European poll found that 51% of workers find that work-related stress is common in the workplace and that four in 10 workers think that stress is not handled well in their organisation.

The new campaign will provide workers and employers with simple practical tools to deal with psychosocial risks and will raise awareness of the positive effects of stress prevention in the workplace.

The EU commissioner for employment, social affairs and inclusion, László Andor said: ”Managing work-related stress is one of the cornerstones in ensuring the health, safety and wellbeing of European workers.

”Workplaces cannot afford to ignore work-related stress, which increases absenteeism and lowers productivity.

”A positive working envoirnment is not only important for enabling employees to work longer, it is also imporant to ensure that when workers do retire, they are still in good health.”
