RMT renews call over fatigue

The RMT rail union has made a renewed call for “an end to the casualisation and zero hours contracts culture which is being rolled out across the railways by stealth”.

The union was issuing the warning ahead of last month’s 25th anniversary of the Clapham Junction disaster in which 35 died and hundreds were injured.

The subsequent inquiry into the tragedy highlighted mistakes made by a severely fatigued worker.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow described the tragedy as “an eternal warning of what happens when staff are suffering fatigue”.

He added that “fatigue, and a lack of clear management control, is once again being flagged up as a major issue by our members”.
