Two new general secretaries elected

Two new general secretaries have been recently elected. Doug Nicholls was elected at a special delegate general council meeting to take over at the helm of the GFTU, the federation for specialist unions, when the present incumbent Michael Bradley retires. Nicholls is the former general secretary of the Community and Youth Workers Union, which went on to become part of the Unite general union, where he was a national officer for the community and youth workers’ sector.

Keith Norman’s successor as the general secretary of the Aslef train drivers’ union will be district organiser Mick Whelan. In the second ballot of a close contest he polled 3,683 votes to 3,458 for national organiser Simon Weller. Nick Whitehead was eliminated from the contest in the first ballot.
