Jobs not shares at Royal Mail

Postal workers in Royal Mail have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action, putting their jobs, terms and conditions and a pay rise ahead of the free shares handed out in the recently privatised firm.

The CWU communications’ workers union is allowing two weeks to reach an agreement. However, it has also announced that there will be one day of all-out strike action on Monday, 4 November if no agreement is concluded by that date, with further action under consideration.

The union has also announced a further ballot that will enable postal workers to boycott competitors’ mail, to supplement the strike action.

Over three-quarters (78%) voted in favour of action on a turnout of 63%.
