Highway Code changes this month

Communications workers’ union the CWU has issued a timely reminder to its members that is relevant to all road users: UK traffic rules will change from 29 January.

From that date drivers will have to follow new rules giving stronger priority to pedestrians, and to turning cyclists when at a junction, or changing direction, or changing lane.

The reforms bring in a new hierarchy of road users, with pedestrians at the top, followed by cyclists then, in order, horse riders, motorcyclists and cars, with vans, HGVs and buses at the bottom.

CWU national health, safety & environment officer Dave Joyce said: “Most of us don’t read the Highway Code once we’ve passed our test – so it’s extremely important that we all ensure that we’re aware of these changes, particularly the very many of our members who drive for a living.
