Inflation steady

Under the Retail Prices Index (RPI), the inflation rate was unchanged at 5.0% in July, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Cheaper motoring costs and lower food prices were offset by rising prices in housing and household goods.

However, under the measure favoured by the coalition government — the Consumer Prices Index — inflation rose to 4.4% in July from 4.2% in June.
