Shopworkers’ campaign stepped up

Retail union Usdaw is stepping up its campaign to organise staff at low-cost supermarket chains Aldi and Lidl and to get the firms to recognise the union.

The union has been taking an ad van around both chains’ stores in the North West, and union activists have been talking to staff and shoppers.

Usdaw deputy general secretary Paddy Lillis said: “Aldi is resisting recognising Usdaw as the trade union for their staff, yet we know that many staff are unhappy about the way they are treated at work and morale in store can be pretty low.

“Our message to the company is that, if they are so confident they give their staff a fair deal, then they have nothing to fear from allowing them to be represented by an independent trade union.”

An Usdaw survey of Lidl staff showed many of them to be unhappy about their experience of the company.

Lillis urged management to sit down with the union “so we can work to overcome the significant issues raised in the survey. Many Lidl workers are joining Usdaw and we urge others to sign up.”
