Unite general secretary election

The low turnout in the Unite union’s general secretary election “can give no cause for satisfaction,” the union said.

The election was won by incumbent Len McCluskey with 45.5% of the vote in the three-cornered fight. But there was disappointment at the 12.2% turnout.

The union conceded that “the tone of the campaign will not have helped, [but] the underlying reason remains the [legally imposed] archaic and expensive balloting system”.
