NUJ demands inquiry into press racism

The NUJ journalists’ union has called on the press watchdog, IPSO, to carry out an immediate investigation into the Islamophobia, racism and hatred espoused in the British press.

The call followed widespread protests by Jewish and Muslim organisations as well as over 100 cross-party MPs, at the publication of inflammatory comments by IPSO board member Trevor Kavanagh in his Sun newspaper column in August, referring to “The Muslim Problem”.

Chris Frost, NUJ ethics council chair, said that the comments were “an abuse of free speech” and that Kavanagh was using the actions of a small group of individuals to place blame on a whole religion of 1.8 billion people.
