BA pension closure

British Airways’ announcement that it intends to close its main defined benefit pension scheme has left unions and their members bitterly disappointed.

The Unite and GMB unions said that their own financial analysts had worked tirelessly with the airline to explore ways to keep the pension scheme open and secure it for the future. A joint statement by the unions said: “This announcement sadly confirms that our advice has gone unheeded and that we have been unable to convince British Airways that keeping the scheme open is the right thing to do, for both the company and its employees.”

The unions are demanding urgent talks to discuss the impact of the announcement, whether a solution can be found and, if not, the consequences the airline may face.
