Gen sec elections

Paddy Lillis, deputy general secretary of shopworkers’ union Usdaw, has been elected unopposed to the union’s top job. He will take over as general secretary “some time next year” from retiring leader John Hannett, who has held the post since May 2004.

Meanwhile Bob Monks has been elected unopposed as general secretary of the URTU transport union. He had previously been in the post and was re-elected in 2015. However, the certification officer ordered him to stand down and a new election to be held. Nominations were sought by the end of October 2017 and Monks was the only nominated member.
