PCS gains members


The PCS civil service union has said it has recruited thousands of new members during its recent pay strike ballot.


The ballot itself generated a massive 85.6% “yes” vote in favour of striking. However, the turnout fell short of that required by the 2016 Trade Union Act, which says a majority of those entitled to vote must do so for a strike to be lawful. Turnout was 41.6%.


The union said the ballot delivered the highest yes vote and turnout in the history of the union, “but undemocratic anti-union strike laws … will prevent strike action.” 


However, the union said that “the campaign has made our union stronger, with thousands of new members and hundreds of new reps and advocates”.
