The NASUWT teaching union will have a new general secretary in three months’ time after Dr Patrick Roache, the union’s “official nominee”, was elected unopposed. Roache, the current deputy general secretary will succeed Chris Keates, currently acting general secretary, at the NASUWT’s annual conference in April this year.

Keates led the union for over 15 years, having first been elected in 2004.

Meanwhile, Mark Serwotka has been re-elected as general secretary of the PCS civil service union for the fifth time. He gained 53.3% of the vote in a three-cornered fight, beating Marion Lloyd (30.1%) and Bev Laidlaw (16.4%).
