Worries over public transport

Journeys on public transport will inevitably increase, even though the government has urged people to cycle, walk or drive wherever possible.

But the death of Belly Mujinga, a member of the TSSA transport union, was an appalling reminder of the risks (see page 22).

The union has now secured agreement that protective visors will be available for all rail workers who wish to wear them.

But what about the travelling public?

The government says social distancing guidance must be followed rigorously, but that people should only “aim” to wear a face covering (not necessarily a face mask) in enclosed spaces.

The RMT transport union, which is opposed to the early relaxation of lockdown measures, says it should be compulsory, with masks provided free at stations and able to be disposed of safely. The Unite general union, supports an increase in bus journeys but says it must be gradually implemented. With dozens of bus drivers already dead from the virus, maintaining safety and retaining confidence is paramount.

It said that means risk assessments being undertaken and fully applied, and social distancing measures to protect drivers.
