New law changes in the offing

The Greek government has indicated that it is pressing ahead with major changes to employment law.

Speaking at the end of January, prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the pandemic had changed the labour market, and that “labour legislation, whose core elements are now 40 years-old, must adapt to this new reality”.

Consultations have started on the proposed changes which, among other things, require mandatory electronic voting in strike ballots and union elections, and electronic registration for unions themselves (see Labour Research, December 2020, page 8).

Despite opposition from the unions, the government hopes the measures will be adopted by the spring.
