Historical high for RPI

The first inflation figures for 2022 saw another historically high figure for Retail Prices Index (RPI) inflation: 7.8% — its highest since 1991.

The government’s preferred Consumer Prices Index (CPI) measure was up by 5.5% and CPIH (with a housing element) 4.9%. But the accuracy and relevance of all these figures is being challenged as households struggle with the cost-of-living crisis (see page 25).
