Paying for care handbook

Geoff Tait, Pauline Thompson, Helen Winfield and David Simmons, Child Poverty Action Group, 94 White Lion Street, London N1 9PE, 523 pages, paperback, £14.95

This is an updated guide on the services available for people in need of care- whether because of old age, physical disability or long-term illness. As before, it covers those still living in their own homes but unable to cope and needing the help of a carer, for instance to do shopping and housework.

It also deals with the care homes which can provide personal care and assistance. It explains how much users can be expected to pay, and the deductions available via social security benefits.

New changes in the law are also examined. Much to be recommended.
