UNISON calls for action on cancer in workplace

Public services union UNISON has called on employers to support those with cancer, just like any other disability, and to limit exposure to cancer risks in the workplace. The union made the call as it launched a Cancer in the workplace campaign at a fringe event at the union’s national delegate conference last month.

Macmillan Cancer Support and UNISON’s Disability Unit attended the meeting to highlight the issues raised by cancer in the workplace: “from supporting those who have it to supporting those caring for those affected”.

“The ‘big C’ has been stigmatised for too long,” said UNISON national health and safety officer Tracey Harding. “Employers have for too long been ignorant of their responsibilities. Now’s the time to talk openly about cancer in the workplace and show ... what good workplace policies and procedures should look like.”
