CWU gains

Hundreds of contact centre workers joined the CWU communications union last month in a recruitment blitz called Contactober.

The blitz was a repeat of a successful initiative held in October 2014, and involves teams of CWU volunteers planning local activities to engage with staff, listen to what’s going on in their workplace and introducing them to what the union can offer.

This year’s activities ranged from giving out cakes and sweets to getting a local beauty salon to provide skincare advice, but all with a serious message of the need for a collective voice.

Deputy general secretary Andy Kerr said: “Branches have made a sterling effort this month with over 500 new members, which goes to show that, just being within the workplace, talking to members, listening to their concerns, can produce results.”
