GMB calls on Uber to end legal challenge


The GMB general union has called on the taxi hire firm Uber to recognise a ruling on the employment status of its drivers in France’s highest court and drop its legal challenge in the UK.


Earlier this month, the French Court of Cassation upheld an earlier ruling that an Uber driver was an employee rather than self-employed. 


The GMB says it has won a “hat-trick” of legal cases against Uber since 2016 – in an employment tribunal, the Employment Appeal Tribunal, and the Court of Appeal. They all ruled Uber drivers are workers rather than self-employed and therefore entitled to holiday pay and breaks as well as the minimum wage. But Uber has appealed to the Supreme Court. 


GMB legal director Susan Harris called on the company to recognise the judgment in France is “the end of the legal road”. She said the Uber should abandon its legal challenge and sit down with the GMB to discuss the way forward.
