Apprenticeships hit by Covid

The total number of apprenticeship starts fell by 46% in the first Covid lockdown, according to research by SmallBusinessPrices, a commercial website aimed at small businesses

The most savage reduction was in health and social care, where the number of starts plummeted from 24,058 in the period March-June 2019, to 12,095 in the equivalent period a year later. Large losses were also seen in administration and business management apprenticeship starts.

The study also looked at salaries for different apprenticeships, with the average apprenticeship salary coming out at just over £17,000. The best rates were found in direct learning support, followed by teaching, while the worst were in animal and veterinary science, followed by media and communications.
