Pay increase in Italian construction

Unions and employers have reached an agreement on a pay deal for around 450,000 workers in the construction industry in Italy.

The settlement, which was signed on 3 March, runs from 1 March 2022 until 30 June 2024, although the previous agreement ran out on 30 September 2020. It provides for two increases in basic pay: 5.8% in March 2022 and 4.5% in July 2023. This year’s first increase is slightly higher than current inflation, which was 5.7% in February, but this does not take account of the period without an increase.

The minimum basic rate in the industry is now €947.36 a month. However, workers are likely to benefit from bonuses and supplements, as well as additions negotiated at local level.

The agreement includes important health and safety improvements: a new register of safety representatives; a minimum 16 hours of health and safety training for new employees; and refresher health and safety training every three years.
