Official inaction over construction site

General union Unite has accused the HSE and Westminster council of inaction after it raised the alarm about workers illegally living on a construction site in north London.

Regional officer Paul Lomax contacted the HSE and the council after finding a group of migrant workers renovating several apartment blocks in St John’s Wood were living on the site. But he says that he received no response to the serious safety questions he raised.

“Workers must never be allowed to live on a construction site, the potential for serious injury is huge and there are also massive occupational health issues that need to be considered,” he said.

Lomax wants Westminster council and the HSE to immediately take responsibility for the dangerous site and ensure that no one is living on it or any other building site.
