Police to be balloted on right to strike

Police officers in England and Wales are set to vote on whether they should have the right to strike, the Police Federation has announced.

A meeting of the federation's joint central committee decided to ballot the entire membership on whether full industrial rights for rank and file officers should be sought.

The staff association said in a statement: “The federation’s 135,000 members will be provided with all relevant information and the ballot will be held as soon as possible. In tandem, the Police Federation will explore all the consequences, including the legal position, with regards to police officers obtaining full industrial rights.”

A protest event in central London is to be held ahead of its annual conference in May, to “highlight the unprecedented attack on policing by this government and the consequences that these cuts will have for public safety”.
