CWU gets new gen sec

Members of the CWU communications workers’ union have elected a new general secretary.

Dave Ward, the deputy general secretary (postal) will replace the incumbent, Billy Hayes, from the 1 June for a five-year period.

The votes for the two candidates were: Dave Ward (20,353 or 55%) and Billy Hayes (16,851 or 45%).

Ward said: "I will continue the fight against austerity and ensure that protection and enhancement of jobs, pay and terms and conditions is at heart of everything CWU does.”
