P&O Ferries CEO ‘wins’ world’s worst boss title

Peter Hebblethwaite, the CEO of P&O Ferries who illegally sacked 786 seafarers in March by Zoom call (see previous issues), has been awarded the title of this year’s “worst boss in the world” by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC).

Hebblethwaite beat a shortlist of five others to “win” the title. The runners up were: Jeff Bezos of Amazon (2014’s winner); Alan Joyce of Qantas; Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum of Emirates Airline and Group; Howard Schultz of Starbucks; and Gina Rinehart of Hancock Prospecting. Previous titleholders include Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary.

Sharan Burrow, the ITUC’s outgoing general secretary, commented: “Working people and their unions are demanding a new social contract between governments, workers and business with jobs, wages, rights, equality, inclusion, and social protection. Let’s clean up the bad bosses of the world and stop these corporate predators in their tracks.”
