The limits to capital

David Harvey, Verso, paperback, 478 pages, £17.99

This book succinctly explains capitalist development from a historical and geographical viewpoint.

Although it was first published in 1982, it brilliantly anticipated the shape and power of neo-liberalism in transforming the world economy. It starts with Marx's argument on the falling rate of profit, explains the mushrooming of finance capital and the role of equity capital, and concludes with analysis of geopolitical and geographical issues.

This new edition contains a valuable introduction detailing new developments and discusses the fluctuations in contemporary world markets. In particular, the author highlights the process of "accumulation by dispossession" - the opening up of new fields to business, such as the NHS or council housing. This is a highly readable and prescient book and will be an invaluable guide to anyone carrying out research in this area.
