Southern rail crisis

Despite the implementation of an “emergency timetable”, involving the cancellation of nearly 350 trains, calls have intensified to strip Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) of its Southern trains franchise, after Southern’s performance has failed to improve.

The RMT rail union is in dispute with the operator over plans to reduce the number of conductors (see page 22) and has demanded urgent action from new transport secretary Chris Grayling. The latest performance figures revealed that the GTR service remains at rock bottom.

“If the politicians continue to try and blame the staff for the failings on these routes it will be a massive missed opportunity that lets GTR off the hook yet again,” said RMT general secretary Mick Cash.
