Civil service cuts


The PCS civil service union has written to the civil service head, Jeremy Heywood, to say all plans for cuts and office closures should be halted in the wake of the vote to leave the European Union.


The union also said it believes substantial extra resources should be made available for the work required in implementing Brexit. Commenting on the reshuffle of the department, PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: “Big changes in the civil service are not unusual under new governments but they are still incredibly unsettling for staff.


“We would oppose any attempt by Theresa May’s government to use this as an excuse for more cuts and closures, and we believe the Brexit vote means the civil service will need massive resources in the coming years.”
