Bereavement leave

The Parental Bereavement (Leave and Pay) Act 2018 has received Royal Assent and is expected to come into force in April 2020.

The Act will give employees the statutory right to two weeks’ bereavement leave if they lose a child under the age of 18, including if they suffer a stillbirth from 24 weeks of pregnancy.

The right to leave will apply from day one of employment. However, the right to be paid for that leave will be subject to qualifying conditions.
