UNISON issues call over violence at work

Public services union UNISON has written to every councillor in the UK asking them to make the union’s End Violence at Work charter a central part of their commissioning process.

It has called on councils to refuse to grant service and partnership contracts to organisations that won’t sign up to the 10-point plan. UNISON launched the charter in response to the high levels of violence reported by members working in the community sector.

It has a list of basic actions third sector employers can take immediately to improve safety at work, including support for the victims of violence and proper monitoring of incidents.

Thirty-five charities and housing associations, including the Royal National Institute for the Blind and Tai Calon Community Housing, have already signed up to the campaign, which the union says is gaining momentum.
